The World Of Gummy Bears

Gummy bears have been around forever – they originated in Germany where a gentleman by the name of Hans Riegel, Sr., a confectioner from Bonn, started the Haribo company in 1920. In 1922, inspired by the trained bears seen at street festivities and markets in Europe through to the 19th century, he invented the Dancing Bear, a small, affordable, fruit-flavored gum candy treat for children and adults alike, which was much larger in form than its later successor, the Gold-Bear (Goldbär). The success of the Dancing Bear’s successor would later become Haribo’s world-famous Gold-Bears candy product in 1967. (Source: Wikipedia). Since then, the world of the gummy bear has taken on a life of its own and we’ve commercialized it into a 21st century icon making them into kids vitamins, night lights, apparel, ear phones and even party plates!

This recent chandelier installation made by New York-based product designer Kevin Champeny was recently commissioned by home furnishings company Jellio to create a giant gummy bear chandelier. This blew my mind!!!

Constructed from 5,000 hand-cast, high-gloss acrylic gummy bears, this unusual light was made in a limited edition of just ten and it takes two months to create each one. If you think this is exactly what your home needs, you can pick one up from Jellio for $6,500 USD (approx. £4,000) or $2,400 (approx. £1,500) for a miniature one which measures 18″ in diameter instead of 31″.
